Certain Essential Oils have been documented to be excellent for reducing inflammation with their anti-inflammatory properties.
Some oils are better suited for certain types of inflammation, for example:
- Myrrh, vetiver, cistus and helichrysum may assist with pain/inflammation due to tissue and capillary damage and bruising due to injury or even varicose veins. I have used these oils in a blend for my mum when she suffered from cellulitis, for which she found relief.

- German chamomile and melaleuca may be helpful with inflammation due to bacterial infection.
- Ravintsara, hyssop, myrrh and thyme may be helpful for inflammation caused by viral infection.
Some other oils that may of benefit for pain/inflammation include Clove, nutmeg, lavender, Roman chamomile, peppermint, wintergreen, copaiba and palo santo.
For maximum benefit, these oils may be used singularly or made into a blend in a base oil, for example, jojoba or almond oil! My preferred oil base for blends is the Young Living V6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil (coconut) which is light, colourless and odourless.
V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex can be used to create custom massage oils or to dilute essential oils for sensitive skin, it has a long shelf life and does not stain clothes.
Young Living blends that are made ready for you include: Purification, PanAway, Aroma Siez, Melrose, Relieve It, Deep Relief!
Here is one of my favourite anti-inflammatory recipe:
- 6 drops Eucalyptus blue
- 6 drops melaleuca
- 4 drops German chamomile
- 2 drops peppermint
- 2 drops lemongrass

Blend with your favourite base oil, and massage into inflamed areas a couple of times a day. AS with all oils, keep away from your eyes and sensitive areas. Do not use these oils neat on your skin.
